WMC7- Adding DVB-S2: No tuners available etc.

$

I wonder if anyone can help- I'm at the end of my tether!

The one draw-back I have with my PC is that there is only one PCI-e x16 slot & two PCI expansion slots. So I have a Radeon R7 240 in the PCI-e slot & in the PCI slots, until recently, I have had a PCTV DualSatPro 4000i (2x DVB-S) & Avermedia A16C (1x DVB-T + Video-in) all running flawlessly.

However, being in Ireland, I have been anxious to install a DVB-S2 tuner in order to access all the BBC channels in HD. AFAIK there are no Dual DVB-S2 PCI cards available. So I have to-date tried installing:
  • TBS 6981 on PCI with a PCI-PCIe adapter (2x DVB-S2)
  • Technotrend S2-3600 on USB (1x DVB-S2)
  • Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-HD-S2 on PCI (1x DVB-S2)

Every time I have tried these cards, & in different combinations, initially all seems fine with WMC7- HD Channels are all detected & showing perfectly. Then soon after I get Error messages: No Tuners Available, No Signal, Recordings failed: MC Receiver Service stopped working etc. Weirdly it's not only confined to selecting HD channels but also other channels not using the DVB-S2 tuners, so all tuners are locked until I restart the PC.

Relevant points:
  • TBS: I could put this down to the PCI-PCIe adapter not being capable of this application
  • Technotrend: when the error occurs the light on the USB box turns from green to orange. Support told me this means no driver loaded
  • Technotrend & Hauppauge: because I want at least 2x DVB-S(2) tuners I have installed these along with the PCTV tuner

Just to state I have been extremely careful with each set-up as regards clearing the WMC Guide & Tuner Set-up, uninstalling previous tuners & deleting drivers, checking no hidden devices are still left over, I have even reset WMC by turning it off & on again in Windows Features. I also tried Mediaportal with the TBS - same errors (still prefer WMC to MP). I even tried installing DVBLink Server + TV Source with the TBS which resulted in "Play Ready Update" Errors, which I think in DVBLink just means No Tuner/No Signal.

My conclusions, one or more of:
  • The PCI-PCIe adapter doesn't work for DVB-S2 cards
  • WMC can't handle DVB-S2
  • WMC can't handle mixing DVB-S and DVB-S2 tuners
  • My hardware drivers are seriously messed-up (I know there are Graphics Driver cleaners but what about TV Tuners?)

My remaining options seem to be:
  • Uninstall-reinstall all tuner card drivers & run TV Setup yet again
  • Try DVBLink + TV Source with Technotrend or Hauppauge and PCTV
  • Reinstall Windows 7
  • Give-up on DVB-S2 on my PC:(

Anybody any insights?

Spotify Connect with Sony... or how to ruin your speakers.

Sony STR-DN1050 has Spotify Connect.

If I mistakenly click on max volume in Spotify (all that's needed is a single mouse click at the wrong position), it automatically sets the receiver volume to the maximum. This is an effective way to ruin both my ears and my speakers as the maximum volume is way above what my speakers can handle.

It's arguably equivalent to providing an old style remote control where one of the buttons says 'MAX VOLUME'. I'm not going to press that - but what if I press it by mistake?!

On Onkyo TX-NR636 and Yamaha RX-677, I can set a maximum volume in settings, a value I know that my speakers can handle. With Sony, I can't.

This seems like a major issue preventing me from using Spotify Connect comfortably. I don't want a single mouse click to ruin expensive speakers.

Additionally, all friends in my house connecting to my Wifi can also mistakenly set the volume too high through their mobile phones by using Spotify to connect to my receiver; destroying equipment worth thousands of dollars.

Measurement needed? Sharp Aquos Q

Hi, I just bought the Sharp Aquos Q+ LC 60SQ15U to replace our failing Sony Bravia KDS 60A3000. I had built a custom wood stand/table for the Sony, but now have to add on to it's height to keep the new set centered at eye level when sitting. The Sony had a built-in sound bar on the bottom and the new sharp doesn't so I have to make up about 5-6 inches ruffly. What I need is a dimension I have not been able to find anywhere. I need to know the exact fully assembled distance in inches between the bottom of the new Sharps X-shaped base (as it sits on a table) and the bottom of the LCD screen it-self, not the frame surrounding it.

I can then subtract the difference between the two sets and construct an addition to the table, actually raising it's TV hight and shortening it's depth to to allow for the new JBL SB100 sound bar to sit just below and slightly in-front of the new set, on a lower forward step you might say. Any how, if any of you owning one could take a measurement and let me know, I would appreciate it greatly.

Thanks.

Rules of Thumb

Is there a rule of thumb for room width vs. how many seats per row?

And what about length of room vs. number of rows?

How much room is needed behind an AT screen (I assume just enough for speakers)?

In a previous post I mentioned the room I am putting my ht in is 11' x 15.5'. Though I have not seen the structure of the room it looks like I will be able to extend the length ~4 feet (2' at either end and maybe a bit more). Width will be harder to work with but I might be able to get up to 1' but that would be about it (not sure if I can get any really) since there will be a mechanical room in the way.

I would like to get 2 rows of seating with a 3 seat front row and a 4 seat back row (although reversing this is acceptable). The front row would not have the width issues that the back row will so that may be the only place a 4 seat row will work. Worst case would be 2 rows of 3 seats but I worry about not having a staggered arrangement and any obstruction issues that might incur.

Receiver for Audio Only - 2 Channel?

$

Hi -

My 30 year old SONY STR-GX7-ES has finally breathed its last. It served me well and I'll miss it - but it's time for a new Receiver. This will be for audio only - separate from my HT setup. Have a couple of wonderful Audition towers (two 8" drivers each). I listen to Jazz and singer/songwriter music, a bit of classical.

My budget is pretty low - preferably close to $300 or maybe a bit over.

Obviously I don't care about surround features or HDMI for video - but I do want the best audio I can manage at my price point.

Any thoughts? I haven't looked at receivers in nearly 10 years so I'm pretty out of the loop.

Thanks in advance!

Michael

Today's Show:
SVS was founded in 1998 by four audiophile/engineers who noted that customers were paying too much for lackluster subwoofer performance because of a manufacturing to sales process that was stacked against the consumer. The conventional model, where just good enough subs were sold at high markups did a disservice to customers who wanted great audio experiences but didn’t have unlimited funds.

Does this sound ok?

So I have decided to ditch my aging AVR and dive head first into a PC based setup using a 2012 H/P desktop running Windows 7 that I have not been using for a long time. I will be picking up an 8 channel Behringer FCA-1616 to use as the DAC, a 4TB external storage unit to store my Bluray and DVD collection, and a Bluray drive. This will be running with JRiver straight in to the Behringer FCA-1616, which will then feed my four iNuke1000dsp pro amps that power my 5 speakers and my two iNuke3000 pro amps which drive my subs.

Does this sound like a good setup? Would my old 2012 H/P desktop work ok for this? Would I be better served by also upgrading to Windows 8? Do I need any other hardware (ie new sound card, video card, ect)? I am NOT a gamer. I want to keep the cost down as low as possible. Any opinions and advice would be very nice!

Which DAC is better?

Hi Folks,

Just bought a NAD D 3020 along with Martin-Logan Motion XL16 bookshelf speakers.

I am currently using an older Sony DVP-NS72HP DVD player as my source for playing CDs.

The DVD player is connected to the D 3020 via Digital optical, thus using the NAD's DAC. Everything sounds excellent, very clean and natural; however:

Question- If I upgrade the CD source to a NAD C 516BEE and connect it to the D 3020 via analog RCA, thus using the C 516 DAC, will I get an even better sound?

In other words, Which unit has the better DAC and/or which connection method is better if there is no difference in the quality of the DACs ?

Thanks, in advance, for member help

I have an SI Projections screen measuring 10' diagonally. The frame is fine and all the pins that the screen snap to are fine, but the screen itself is damaged. It's white-ish on one side and gray-ish on the other, if that matters.

Thanks

DIY Sound Group Speakers

I was very impressed with the recent build thread and review of the new version 2 Fusion 15 speakers. Does anyone know when the Fusion 18 will be released? And at what price point for the kit and flat pack?

Also, for those of us without any woodworking equipment is there an option to get these fully assembled? Anyone on the forum willing to assemble a kit for a fee? If not what would be the best option to have them assembled? Thanks.

Very Basic Question about Streaming

Please pardon my lack of understanding of this technology. Although I am a long time member of AVS, almost all my expertise is in the area of antenna reception.
Around Christmas I finally switched to getting Netflix over the internet through a new Sony rather than DVD's in the mailbox. It is wired directly into the Time Warner box with a Ethernet cable. A couple of days ago I could not watch my shows due to "error 303". This was the first time that happened and I thought I had a major problem. But thanks to members on this site I was reassured that it was an outage with Sony servers.
That got me to thinking, does everything I watch on the internet come through Sony's computers first? I really only use Netflix, Weather Nation and Huffington Post. I am accustomed to thinking that my computer connects directly to such sites. Do people who have a computer connected to their TV have more reliable service as they are "cutting out the middleman"?
Again thank you for any explanation. I just wanted to understand what I am doing. I am obviously stuck in the 90's (sometimes I think more like the 70's).

What color is the dress!

New Receiver or speakers?

I first had a lower end Yamaha receiver RXV 676 I believe paired with JBL ES80 towers that were just too bright and ear fatiguing at moderate to high listening volumes because of the aluminum dome tweeters. I wanted a little more warmer sound so I sold the receiver and speakers and bought a 6007 Marantz and Boston Acoustic m340 towers with silk dome tweeters. I have the m center and m25's for the rears and run it in 5.2 Everything sounds good but now its a little too warm, just doesn't have much of that sparkly treble. I now have a warm sounding receiver with warm sounding speakers.I know it sounds picky but I would like a little more treble but not too much where it is ear fatiguing like before. I thought about switching to a Yamaha Aventage receiver or a Pioneer elite because I know they have a little more brighter sound to them. Or keeping the Marantz and get some Definitive Technology super towers or something like those. Getting a new receiver would be the easiest option because I would not have to sell all the speakers.
