Hi, I'm looking to buy my first home theater projector. I've been eyeing the Epson 4010 lately and planned to pull the trigger today because I saw Best buy had it on sale. But I asked them if I could see it in person in their magnolia room. They said no but could show me Sony options. They said that Sony makes the best projectors because they make the cameras that the movies are filmed on and that Epson specializes more in business office style projectors. They showed me the Sony VPL-HW45ES and it did look very nice to me. But I've seen so much online saying that the Epson 4010 and or the Epson 5040ub are amongst the top home theater projectors in the price range. I was also told at Best buy that Epson exaggerates the brightness on their projectors and that the 2200 advertised lumens would really be closer to 800 and that Sony's 1800 lumens (I think) would be basically 1800 lumens no exaggeration.
Can all of you very educated people please tell me if what this guy was saying has merit? I got the impression that he had some sort of incentive to push Sony but he denied that.
Any opinions on which is better would be greatly appreciated! Trying to make a buying decision soon.

So I have taken my first attempts at upgrading to a DIY passive sub and external amp. And like I have read in several threads, my sub pre-out voltage(/gain?) seems to be low,as the sub volume is low without maxing out the AVR trim levels and the amps gain. I currently do not have a multi-meter or mic to use with REW. Most of the reading that I found used REW with a mic and/or a multi-meter. Are there any threads or articles that could help get me in the ballpark until I can purchase those things? If it matters my receiver is a Sony STR-DN1080 the amp is a Yamaha P2500s the sub is a JBL Stage 1210 4ohm. And the amp is currently bridged/mono 4ohm. I know the amp and sub not the cream of the crop but, the price was right and i'm a novice. Any help would be appreciated

Hello,
For Black Friday I want to pick up an Xbox One X and perhaps check out 4K gaming, but am unsure if my budget makes this worthwhile. I currently have an Epson 2150 projector as my main "tv" for living room movies, streaming, and gaming. I also have an older Panasonic VIERA TC-P50GT25 plasma TV in the bedroom for Netflix streaming. I really like the plasma TV for the bedroom but its age is starting to show. If I were to purchase a new TV, it would be a Samsung NU7100 or TCL R617 (55-65" models) to replace the plasma and be used for Netflix + 4K gaming.
Given my current projector and the older plasma, are these models even worthwhile to consider? I am not quite prepared to drop $800+ on a TV and want advice if I should consider a budget 4K LCD or just hold off and continue gaming on the projector. Does anyone have experience going from an older plasma to a newer budget LCD?

I just ordered a 150” ST acoustically transparent screen. Behind the screen is a storage room. My plan is to cut holes in the drywall the same size as the speakers and put bookshelf speakers behind the screen. It seems like I would get better sound from bookshelf speakers as opposed to in-wall speakers. My primary question is about ported speakers. In my limited research it seems that a speaker port is for airflow in and out of the speaker. And, while it does affect the sound of the speaker I don’t think any significant sound comes out of the port itself, does it? Reason I’m asking is all the speakers I am considering have the port on the rear of the speaker. If there is much sound coming out of the port it will be lost in the storage room behind the screen.
BTW, the speakers I am most highly considering are the Monolith Air Motion Cinema 5 and it’s matching center vs the MartinLogan lx16 and MartinLogan Motion 30 center. I’m leaning toward the MartinLogans because I like the looks of the MartinLogan FX wide dispersion for surrounds better than the Monoliths.
(mods: I posted this same question in the home theater construction sub forum yesterday and did not get any responses. I realize now this is a more appropriate sub forum. Please delete the other post.)

Hi everyone, I have been doing some research and an getting more confused the not I research. I would greatly appreciate any help.
I would like to buy speakers and a sub for my basement with the sole purpose of listening to music. The ceilings are ~9ft high and the space is an open space about 30 ft *40 ft. On one end of the room I have a soundbar with a sub (Samsung hw-n950) hooked up to my TV. This soundbar is great for listening to the TV unfortunately it is not quite loud enough to cover the whole space. On the other end of the room I would like to get a couple bookshelf speakers and a sub.
Currently I have this amp http://www.smsl-audio.com/productshow.asp?id=95 I would like to hookup a Chromecast audio to this amp and my soundbar to get synced audio to cover my whole basement. My budget is about $1000.
Some of the speakers I have looked at include the elac debut 2.0 bookshelves, the whaferdale diamond 225s and the Dali zensor 1. I might even consider the kef ls50s if you guys feel they will be a major step up.
Apart from recommendations some of the questions I had were:
1. Will these bookshelf speakers be enough to cover my space? We do throw party's and enjoy loud music.
2. Will the amp be able to handle the speakers I'm looking into? Will it be able to handle towers?
3. Any sub recommendations? Will the amp limit which subs I could choose? I have been considering the bebut 2.0 3030.

I'm looking for a movie database that has somewhat reliable audio and video quality ratings. I have a lot of blu-rays, but not UHD blu-rays yet, and I am building an atmos system and CIH projection system, and I want to acquire some great demo material for when the system is finished. Also, Black Friday coming up, so...
Is blu-ray.com a reliable source to find the best demo material? i.e. use their ratings filters? Or is there a thread here with some kind of definitive list? Other website?

Hi guys I'm interested in upgrade my cheap audio system to something better, right now I'm using my Harman Kardon HK 3490

http://www.smsl-audio.com/productshow.asp?id=94, but I don't know which is better, the HK 3490 or the A6; I'm interested in stereo audio without subwoofer, just pure stereo sound, this are the specs (data sheet, tech. data)of both, Integrated Amp inside the A6 and the amp section in the HK3490:
HK 3490:

A6 ICEPower:

The biggest TV that I can have is 60". Any recommendations on a sub $1000 rig? I have plenty of info on 55's but 60's are a little harder to research.
The Sony KD60X690E and Vizio D60-F3 are my leaders so far.

When I power on the receiver the OSD for the volume stays on the screen until the volume is changed. After that the OSD behaves normally. I swear I've gone through every menu and can't find any specific setting that is configured. Any ideas?
Thanks!

I currently have a PB-1000 and it does a decent job for it's size, I contemplated buying a second but thought I'd like to build my own. The room is currently L shaped but one day it will be a 11'x17' rectangle with concrete floors. About 1500 cubic feet if I completely seal it off, more if I leave the hallway with no door. it's pretty much movies only for us for content. Now I don't need to blow my house apart and dreamed of building the full marty sub but that's probably overkill. I'm not sure on the decibel level I watch movies at but my Onkyo receiver is usually around 70 for volume if that tells you anything. Size isn't really a huge concern but the subs will pretty much sit by the screen inside of the left and right channel speakers.
I live in Canada so my sub selection is minimal. I can get the UM18-22/15-22 and the RSS460/390, those are the marty subs I know work. I'd buy either the 3000dsp or 6000dsp amp. I'm pretty happy with the pb-1000 but you can tell it's running full out and I'd like a little more kick to my movies. Should I do two micro/mini marty's or maybe that VBSS(I think)? Or would a couple sealed 18" subs be enough?

Need some help picking a screen that will help with Ambient Light, be Motorized Retractable, and cost under $3000.
I just picked up a BenQ TK800 and I am going to replace my 20 year old Da-Lite screen with a 120". During the day I watch it a lot while I am working, so I want to improve the handling of Ambient light without messing up the picture for Movie watching when the room is dark.
The window shades remove a lot of light, but there is always some ambient light during the day. Also, since I am often working, there has to be some light in the room.
Also, the seating in room is three couches that form a semi-circle. I am not sure how to calculate the official viewing angle that I have read about.
I've read up on ALR screens but I want to make sure that the side couches will still have a good picture.
I initially was lookin at Elite Screens Saker Tab-Tension CineGrey5D B, 120-inch Diag 16:9, Tensioned Electric Projection Projector Screen, SKT120XHD5B-E12, but did read one user on this forum that claimed it degraded the picture significantly for them.
Appreciate any help!

I'm thinking of adding a sub to my monitor speakers that I use with my computer, but looking to save space. Is anyone familiar with this? Seems to get good reviews...
https://www.crutchfield.com/S-s3PEnr...eries-100.html
The only thing I'm wondering is, will it fill out the bottom end enough? My speakers have a 4" woofer, and do reasonably well with the bass, but are only rated for about 60Hz at the low end. This PSB sub seems a bit pricey for it's size, but it saves a lot of space.
Also, my speaker has a sub out, but it looks to be a 3.5mm jack. Do I need a 3.5mm-to-RCA (R/L) converter?

Really on the fence on this one!!!
Living room = 20'Wx20'Lx12'H
The LG 86UK6570PUB is on sale for $2,500. Regularly $3,000. Seems like a very nice 86" TV. 2018 model and Alexa capable.
Also very tempted to get a Lune 4K UST projector. Goes for $1,700 on ebay. I can pick up a nice Snowhite UST ALR 120" screen from Alibaba for about a grand shipped.
LG 86":
Pro - Simple initial setup, easier to use with Alexa, in English
Con - Smaller screen :(
Lune 4K:
Pro - BIG screen for living room!
Con - Will take some messing around to build stand for PJ, natively in Chinese, might be a slight hassle to use
I'm going to post one in the TV forums too but help me make a decision. Give me your thoughts and considerations that I may not have thought of yet. Seem to be having a major brain fart and can't make up my mind.

Hello, I recently purchased a Toshiba 43LF621U19 (their 4K FireTV edition). Rtings gave it a reasonable rating as a PC monitor, but I'm thinking I may have to disagree (unless I'm missing something here). It boasts 30-bit color depth, but seems unable to display solid blocks of non-primary colors without creating some sort of checker pattern. It gives images a strange texture that doesn't belong. It's fine from across the room, but horrible as a monitor. Are there any settings I can tweak to make this stop? Is it not doing 4:4:4 or something?
Unfortunately, the built-in 4K FireTV is my only 4K source, so I can only test it using the available apps. I used the Netflix show called "Test Pattern" in UHD to make sure I had an actual 4K source (use with a PC requires upscaling from 1080p). I've attached a few images to demonstrate what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance for any advice you can lend! If this monitor just won't work for me, I need to figure out my alternative before Black Friday is over. I'm afraid I'm running out of time to get a decent deal.
Does anyone know the name of this phenomenon? Why does Rtings not address this? Can I find a budget TV that won't do this?
Thanks!

I'm [probably] in the market for a budget 1080p projector as sort of a stop-gap until I buy a house suitable for an actual higher-quality home-theater (4K), hopefully in a year.
The two projectors I'm looking at have very little in common, so I know this is kind of a strange this-or-that:
ViewSonic PJD7828HDL ($442 refurbished) vs. Nebula Prizm II ($299 new).
The intended purpose would include traveling with me to my apartment/hotels when I work in various towns at least 1 day per week, and potentially using it outside.
I have no doubt that the ViewSonic is the better projector in virtually every regard (and I've had superb experience with ViewSonic's products and as a brand); but I'm intrigued by the Nebula because I could plug it in to my jump-starter/battery-pack and watch a movie under the stars in the middle of a field (Nebula claims to use <125W, ViewSonic uses a "max" of 300W, which exceeds my power supply's abilities). This alone could make it more useful to me in the future when I have a nice 4K projector for actual home-theater use but want to watch a movie away from an outlet.
The main difference between them about which I'm concerned is brightness (get ready for a chuckle): The ViewSonic delivers up to 3200lm whereas the Nebula is a mere 200lm-ANSI.
My environments shouldn't be too demanding ambient-light wise; but I've only ever used projectors operating in the 1500+ lm range, and the thought of a projector barely 1/7th of that seems borderline unusable... on the other hand, the fact that sub-400lm projectors exist and often get favorable reviews leads me to believe that there are major holes in my little mental exercise (I know that it's logarithmic, but that still seems like a huge spread to cover).
Reviews of the ViewSonic are plentiful and it is a very well-regarded projector. There is virtually no trace of the Prizm II, however (it's not even listed on Nebula/Anker's site!).
In essence, what it really comes down to is this: is a 200lm projector enjoyable in anything other than a pitch-black room?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice etc.
