HDR to dark?

$

Hi,

I have tested a Philips 65OLED873 and a LG 65OLEDC8 side by side. When watching 4K HDR matarial on NETFLIX the HDR mode is much darker on the Philips, I havde tried to increase the overall ligtning but finds no way that do not wash out colors. It seems like all of the HDD material on NETFLIX is also Dolby Vision and that means that the LG will use DV and this could be a reason why it generates a brighter picture.

Do anyone have any information about this? Can I switch off DV on the LG C8 to set it in the same mode as Philips?

bi-amp speaker using different quality amps

$

I couldn't find much info on this, maybe I have wrong theory. When I upgraded my stereo amp from cheap one to a decent one (Emotiva basx a-100), I can suddenly hear "bass" more clearly. On the high-frequency range, I can't hear any difference between really cheap Lepai (https://www.amazon.com/Lepy-Amplifie.../dp/B01FZKA28Y) and Emotiva.

In the context of bi-amp'able speakers...

Does that mean,
(a) tweeter don't need much power
(b) woofer/sub-woofer need significantly more power

Further, to "save" money w/o compromising end result. Is this valid statement,
(a) to drive the high frequency/tweeter you will get higher clarity if we use "high-end" amplifier with better/linear response : low watt/channel with high accuracy
(for e.g Emotiva basx a-100 or better)
(b) to drive the woofer/sub-woofer you will need more power, linear response of the amplifier may not matter as much at lower frequency : high watt/channel with lesser accuracy
(for e.g. Crown XLS1502, Monoprice Unity 200 in bridged mode)

The thing is it costs a lot to buy high-wattage amp with faithful signal reproduction capability, but that's not required for low-frequency. So, one maybe able to get same effect by bi-amping using different types of amps for half the price.

I would like to know if somebody experimented such configuration.

How much better is the LG C8 than the Sony Bravia af8

I'm trying to get an idea of the difference between these two tvs everyone says something different some say the Sony is better some way the LG is, based on my research the only thing LG is better at is a brighter panel which is a software limitation with Sony and input lag, but it seems input lag is identical between the two if you play in 4k hdr otherwise there's a difference of 9 ms so this part may not seem so terrible as I always want to play in 4k hdr meaning most of the time my experience would be the same input lag wise, for the brightness issue I'm trying to get an idea on how much brighter, is the brightness difference like if you were to switch from high luminance to medium on the Sony or is the difference bigger like high vs low.

Finding this made me worry a lot if this is just 80 nits more then 100 is an extreme difference
Martin Logan HT help

Hi,

I have a dilemma that maybe someone familiar with these speakers/equipment can help me with. There is a local church that had a very nice sound system donated to them about 15 or so years ago. The system was pretty much brand new when donated. The church is now selling it and I think I can get the entire package for a great price.

They are:
Martin Logan Prodigy floor-standing speakers
Martin Logan Theater Center speaker
Martin Logan Descent I Sub
Krell 300c Amp
Krell Krc-3 pre Amp
Tice Audio Power block 3

So my question is would I be better off spending 5k on a NEW system or investing in this one? The reviews online of the Prodigy Electrostatics is overwhelmingly positive but they are 15+ years old. The system has hardly been pushed at all as its only used on Sunday and at low volumes. They visually appear to be in perfect condition.

Thoughts? Should I spend that 5k on a new system or is this system something that could last for a long time still?

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Sony 285ES on 2.35 screen - You've got to be kidding me

I'm finishing my theater and just hung a 2.35 scope screen.

Fired up my newly purchased Sony VPL-VW285ES projector which I was told by Bestbuy/Magnolia and read specs on the model that it supports 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

You have to manually zoom this thing when changing from 16:9 and 2.35? A $5k 4k projector and it can't even save settings for easy changing back and forth, yet an Epson 5040UB does it at half the price?

So if you dial it in at 2.35 and zoom so there are no black bars... then change to a 16:9 movie, it will cut off the top and bottom of the image until you manually zoom the projector back out?

Have any of you worked out a way around this?

Projector or Sony 85" LED?

I'm in the process of purchasing a house and have narrowed it down to 2 different ones. One has a dedicated media room (wired for sound and projector) while the other has a space I would convert which is 11x17ft. Not sure if I want the theater or not.

I play a lot of games and do watch movies. I had a pretty solid 12x18 room in my last house with a Vizio P75 and 7.1. Moving to the new one I'm torn which way to go in the movie room as the Vizio will be in my living room.

Either way i am considering the 85" 900f or projector but I've never looked into projectors and not sure the plus or minuses, cost, mounting etc. Can anyone offer guidance?

Could also look at 82" nu8000

Here are the dimensions of the media room in the one home

Marantz SR6013 vs Denon X4500H?

$

Wondering if someone can give me some opinions on which is the better choice to go with (features/hardware/etc.) outside of course of listening to them both. I currently have a Marantz NR-1606 that I'm looking to upgrade in the next month and pass on to family that could really use it. This will only be my 3rd receiver purchase since 2001 when I started and I didn't know anything the first time just didn't have the money to upgrade it after that, and the NR-1606 was a black friday impulse buy that just worked out after the fact.

I've seen some info that the 4500 is more like an SR7012 but that Marantz has better quality pre-amp outputs on even the 6xxx series so I'm leaning towards staying with the 6013 since I plan to keep whichever I get for a long time this time around and if needed eventually add outboard amps so I don't want to shortchange myself on the pre-amp output quality. That would be a ways off though too so I don't want to lose anything that might be more important in the receiver itself (features etc).

While I know the power difference is minimal, the Denon is also actually on sale right now and cheaper than the 6013 so that would be a nice bonus. I don't know about sound differences between the two receiver brands though. Usage is mostly movies/TV right now, but with the recent upgrade of all my speakers and now getting more power to drive them I definitely want to listen to more music as well.

Thanks for any insight you guys might have.

Office Room speaker advice $1500.

Hi everyone,

Little Background, I have a polk home theater setup, in wall LSI speakers, quite happy with them. But I barely use it. I set it up when I was newly married, now with 2 small kids, I barely get to enjoy it.

I work from home, as such in my home office most of the time, browsing on my 27inch iMac, which is my main Video source. Since I'm always watching everything on my Mac, I connected my old Sony HTIB system, worked great, but now I need a good sound system, and I need everyones advice.

Location: Im basically sitting few feet away from the iMac. So can't have big speakers.

MY options 1 sound bar type setup, one plus no receiver needed, I only need to connect my iMac.
bose has an option for rear speakers with the sound bar... Im sure there are others, I haven't heard any soundbars.

2 something like KEF t100/105 setup, they are slim and decent reviews it seems.

budget 1500 total.
If you have any speaker suggestions, let me know.

Thanks for all responses.

New Home Purchase - Dedicated Media Room or not?

No media Room Plan - 11x17 space where study is listed. Would need to close off down the road as it's open and wire. http://i.imgur.com/KRtVDbI.jpg

Either way i am considering the 85" 900f or projector but I've never looked into projectors and not sure the plus or minuses, cost, mounting etc.

Can anyone offer guidance? Is a media room a novelty and you find not using it much?

Connect Bluray player HDMI audio through PC?

$

Getting the Sony UBP X700 with an HDMI audio out and a coaxial audio out. I have a Dell XPS 8500 with HDMI and S/PDIF connections. Can I use the audio outs on the player and have them go through the PC? Are the HDMI and S/PDIF connections on the PC only for audio out? Any HDMI or Coaxial adapters that can go from the X700 to the 3.5mm input jack on the PC?

Right now I use a PS3 with an RCA out to a 3.5mm adapter that goes into the PC input 3.5mm input jack.

I have it this way to use headphones, this is our bedroom setup. TV, PS3 or the X700 have no headphone jack.

Drop outs. Upgrade my receiver or not?

Looking for advice. I have an older Yamaha RX-V2400 7.1 receiver, which was very good when it came out. It's a beast and sounds mostly great. Two issues with it that might be related: 1) random (1-2 per hour) audio dropouts and 2) it has no HDMI capability. These dropouts last less than a second but are annoying.

I run my (4K) sources to the TV via HDMI and then use the optical out from the TV to the receiver for my 5.1 system (this reciever also is 7.1). I have no complaints about the sound quality besides the dropouts that may not even be the receiver's
fault. I haven't been able to isolate the dropouts to the receiver. Certain cable channels are worse than others and maybe 4K DVDs just have glitches. But streaming from the builtin TV apps like Netflix gives me no dropouts. I'm thinking maybe the HDMI to optical handshake in the TV (Vizio P65-F1) or whatever is the cause.

My question is, is it worth getting a more modern receiver where I could run my HDMI sources directly to the reciever?

Thanks!

Can I use Yamaha RX V685 as 5.1 plus 2 x zone 2?

Apologies if this doesnt make sense but I will have a crack .
I am looking for a new receiver for both music and movies . I am happy with just having 5.1 for the movies.
I have 2 pairs of outdoor speakers . I would always want the outdoor speakers to be playing the same audio.

If I buy the Yamaha RX V685 , can I hook up one pair of outdoor speakers to the surround back terminals, and the other pair to the presence terminals?

the instruction manual herehttps://europe.yamaha.com/files/dow.../web_AV17-0164_RX-V685_om_UCRABGLFH_En_A0.pdf
has differing ways to setup zone 2 depending on if you have surround back or presence speakers, but its not clear how it works if you have neither .

If anyone had any experience with this that would be great.

On a similar note, if I have speakers hooked up to terminals designated as zone 2 , would the zone 2 line out jacks still output the zone 2 audio so I could use that at the same time ?

thanks

Receiver stress

Hello, my old receiver broke down and now I'm looking for a new one. I'm going to use it with the following speakers (2.1 setup):
Jamo Sub 210
2x Jamo Studio S 622

I'm living in Europe so USA deals don't apply here. For me the following three are around the same price:
Denon AVR-X540BT
Onkyo TX-NR474
Yamaha RX-V385

They are all compatible with my speakers (right?) and use ARC. Except from streaming possibilities (which I don't use), what are the main differences? I can't seem to find any so is the price difference in brand name? Or am I overlooking something? Alternatives in that price range (€300) is also welcome. I'm using my speakers for music only, so no video/surround etc. Music quality matters the most.

New construction 9.2.4 20K budget

Hi everyone,
This is my first post after reasearching the forums. In a few weeks we will start to insulate the house we are building. I had a last minute idea to turn the great room (26'x23'x20') into a Dolby Atmos 9.2.4 room, and I need suggestions.

I would like to install the speakers in wall, but it seems like it might not be the best idea (should I install in enclosed speakers in wall, or make a diy enclosure that the in wall speaker will sit in?).

I will install all speakers except for the center channel at ear level and I would like to recess the subwoofers into the wall (front and rear) if possible (opinions against?). The whole house will have rockwool insulation, and most of the wall space except for the rear wall is 12".

Last week I went to Magnolias and really liked the Martin logan speakers (Motion 60xt), as much as the KEF brand which was 2K more for the fronts.

Suggestions for how to spend the 20K (speakers and receiver/amp brands)? Feel free to ask any questions for clarification.

Thanks everyone.

How common are 7.1 vs 5.1 audio tracks for blu-rays?

$
0

So I'm contemplating adding two additional surround speakers to my 5.1 system to make it 7.1 It involves some cost and labor of course, which I think will be worth it if there is a lot of native 7.1 audio for blu-rays out there but I have no idea if that's true or not. When I first started collecting blu-rays back in 2007 there were not many 7.1 blu-rays, most were 5.1 IIRC. I have my own collection to see if 7.1 is available but it takes too long to look at hundreds of individual blu-ray titles. Anyone have a general sense of how common 7.1 audio is for blu-rays these days? Not counting/including Atmos, just traditional 7.1 surround mixes. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Geo restricted content

Hi all,

I have paid subscription for YUPPTV (famous for indian tv contents) Australia package and i live in malaysia. I use smartdns service(set AU DNS in router) instead of VPN to bypass geo restriction and use chromecast to cast. In the smardns service i have chosen AU as a server for YUPPTV.

All set perfect but when i open YUPPTV app in android, somehow the app detects my location and displays only my country channels and not AU version. When i do dnsleak test - it shows AU as my DNS server which is correct. When i try YUPPTV in chrome browser i can AU version which is fine. But not able to get it right in app.

My GPS is off, then how the app smart enough to detect my location. I will soon buying Fire TV and not sure if i will have same issue.

Thanks
