In ceiling versus book shelf for atmos

$

0
Originally my plan was to buy 4 Paradigm Prestige 15B speakers to try and position as atmos/height speakers to compliment my 5.1 speaker set up (4 studio 100's, CC-570 and servo-15 sub) because the wife said that she did not want holes in the ceiling for atmos speakers……long story but the wife changed her mind and now I'm trying to decide which way to proceed.

I was fine with the 15B's figured I could made it work with some energy into positioning and mounting but now I'm wondering if the in ceiling setup would give me more of the intended sound fields.

So I'm looking at Paradigm E80-R for the in ceiling speakers and wondering how they would work? Paradigm doesn't have a dedicated atmos speaker selection that I can find but these look like they would work.

feedback on any of these thoughts would appreciated.

And Happy holidays to all!

budget tv faceoff: vizio and tcl in canada

$

A few decent budget options in canada for 50 inch TVs all year long is the vizio 49v505 from Costco and the tcl 49s425 from amazon.

This tv will be in a gym. Not for movies , mostly sports.
Dark room.
The Costco warrenty is 40 dollars cheaper . Not sure which is better.
Total cost with 5 years warrenty is pretty even.
Is not the main tv.

Can anyone shed some light which you would reccomend?
Is the tcl 425 the same as USA s405 that received good reviews?

Thanks for your time. Any info is good info.

Quick and cost effective black out options??

$

I have a 110" projection setup. I'm wanting to black out or darken the wall behind the screen, the ceiling (4-5ft out from top of screen), and side walls (4-5ft out).

Essentially, think of a big shadow box.

I know the BEST option is black velvet. However, this is one of the pricier options. For velvet, I'd build panels and wrap them.

I was thinking of using acoustic foam panels instead. You can pick up a 24pack on Amazon for like $50. My fear is that it would NOT "black out" the reflective light as well as velvet or even matte paint.

What are the thoughts here? I would be buying these panels...or similar

What is an NU740D? Anyone know the nits?

Hello,

I have been just happily enjoying my old JVC pj in the theater and in our bright living room, a combination of my old Toshiba 56" RPTV and a cheap, smaller Samsung LCD that she won in a raffle at work.
Sometimes one looks better than the other and we just look at the one that looks best at the time.

I was planning on looking into getting another TV next year.

So with me not having done any research or even browsing, my gf picks up a 65" NU740D from Costco to use upstairs instead of the small Samsung TV.

She knows that I am likely to switch it out for something else, but wanted to surprise me.

I cannot find any information on the Samsung NU7400 or the NU740D. The Samsung website barely acknowledges it, only showing anything about it if you perform an explicit search, and then only offering a manual or two in a "Support Only" section. Searches here at AVS only show it listed as one of the TV's serviced by a general firmware update.

So does anyone know what I have here with this NU740D from Costco )

Is it a big box version of the NU7300 or 7100, or a halfway version from those to an NU8000?

I have not opened it yet. Costco now only seems to offer a NU800D on their website, so I doubt I could even go down and look at one in the store.

I am not sure what price she got it for, but it will be in a room with a lot of windows and no window treatments.

If she got it cheap enough, I may just keep it and see what we might get next year. If it was higher money, I might swap it for an 82 inch NU8000, if I can find some of the pricing that was around for BF and pre-Christmas.

It would just help a lot to know what it is and how it would compare to the other choices out there, especially the brightness versus other sets.

Thanks for any help on this,

Doug

( I do appreciate the thought and the gift. :) It was very nice of her to think about it and do her best to find a nice TV. She will probably be watching it more than me, so finding the best option benefits us both)

Problems with Yamaha 3070, JVC X5500 and HTPC combination

I have Yamaha 3070, HTPC equipped with Geforce 1050ti, Z370 mob and i3 8100, and JVC X5500 projector. HTPC has windows 10 home, version 1803. Projector is connected with 4K/60 capable hdmi cable (Supra) to the receiver, and the HTPC is connected with 4K/60 capable hdmi cable (Supra) to the receiver. Projector, GF1050 and Yamaha should be fully 4K/60 capable, in fact 4K/60 works with Yamaha, JCV and Oppo 4K BD player combination with the same hdmi cables (that is something I have tested). As far as I understand Yamaha should be in pass through mode, at least I cannot find menu option that I should change for that. I also cannot find any setting from JVC X5500 that should be changed, the projector just displays anything that is sent to it (?).

The problem(s)/question(s) is/are the following:
1) HTPC recognizes Yamaha 3070 as the display, not the projector. Is this correct? To me it sounds weird as the display in fact is X5500.
2) I cannot change resolution above 1920*1080 from windows display settigns or nvidia settings panel. Also X5500 recognizes 1920*1080 / 60 as the highest resolution coming from HTPC. To my understanding I should be able choose also 4K resolution from windows display settings. I have not tested the HTPC with real 4K material, however I have understood that this should not be connected to the windows resolution settings, or is it (and I should have some 4K material to tests, e.g. netflix)?

Request help on matching old to new Marantz receiver

$

I am new to this forum and have recently read the threads about 2018 Marantz receivers. I would like to ask for help from the more experienced users, in order to make a decision on which Marantz receiver to buy.

I have a 20+ year old Marantz SR8000. It is one of my favorite receivers. But, alas, many of the features do not work, and it needs to be replaced. The challenge is to match the output of my new receiver to my current PSB speakers. I would greatly appreciate any advice on a new receiver that will drive my speakers as well (or better) than my SR8000. One more constraint: budget. I will be trying to stay less than $1200, if that is possible.

Our use of the receiver is for audio from our Samsung 65 inch 4K TV, ROKU movie streaming, Blu-ray movies, and general music. I’m really looking forward to the upgrade to enjoy newer features.

For info, the spec sheet on my old SR8000 says the output is 105 W/Ch at 8 ohms (20Hz-20kHz, 0.05%).

Here’s the speaker specs on the PSBs that I need to drive:
Fronts: Stratus Silver, nom 4 ohms, max 250 W
Center: C5, nom 8 ohms, max 200 W
Rears: Image 3LR, nom 6 ohms, max 150 W
Sub-woofer: Image Subsonic 6, nom 4 ohms, 220 W

I am considering buying either a Marantz SR5013 or a Marantz SR7012 (there are a few new ones still on the market). Both fit my budget, but I do not know if they will drive my PSBs with the same level of output that I am accustomed to with the SR8000.

Here’s the output specs on the Marantz SR5013:
100 W/2ch at 8 ohms (20Hz-20kHz, 0.08%)
140 W/2ch at 8 ohms (1kHz, 0.7%)
200 W/1ch at 8 ohms (1kHz, 10%)

Here’s the output specs on the Marantz SR7012:
100 W/2ch at 8 ohms (20Hz-20kHz, 0.08%)
125 W/2ch at 8 ohms (20Hz-20kHz, 0.05%)
165 W/2ch at 8 ohms (1kHz, 0.7%)
235 W/1ch at 8 ohms (1kHz, 10%)

I would greatly appreciate any advice on whether the SR5013 or the SR7012 will drive my PSB speakers with similar performance to my old SR8000. And if anyone thinks I need to consider an alternative, I am open to advice.

Thanks very much!

Carl

Upgrade Speaker Advice

Another tired old topic, I know! Sorry. I want to upgrade my current front/center speakers. I am an older lady so please use simple talk, I will be setting up or installing anything myself. Currently I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-LX101 receiver, Pioneer Bs22LR fronts/matching center, Sony cheap sub, Sony cheap bookshelf’s for rears. The fronts and center are what I would like to upgrade to get an appreciable richer sound. I watch occasional movies but mostly binge watch tv series on Netflix/Hulu. And maybe that’s actually why I don’t consider the sound from my current setup good enough.
My budget is around $700. If a better sub would make a big difference, either making what I have a lot better or what I upgrade to much better, I will put it on a wish list and get it as soon as I can. The room is about 13x15 w/ 8’ ceiling.
Another question - my receiver is capable of adding Dolby Atmos height speakers but my thinking is they don’t improve sound unless your source was recorded with it, am I correct? So they wouldn’t improve my current speakers sound just by adding them?
ETA: I would want recommendations to be compatible with my receiver and the sub I will eventually replace and the cheap Sony rears (they don’t kick in much with the content I watch) thank you for any help you might be

Home Surround sound system help.

Hello Everyone.

I just purchased a home and inside the home the way they have the audio system setup is a little.... Dated. Lol.

The living area has 20 foot roof and in the roof there are 4 large Bose (not sure what kind) speakers flush mounted to the ceiling.
In the front wall there is a built in entertainment center with a center speaker, a left and right speaker (above the TV) and then a Subwoofer that from the size of the box I would guess was a 15in speaker (lol)

So they have it running from the speakers into a Pioneer box with AV cables running into the back of the cable box with the audio out ports.

It sounds very good but here is my problem.

I can only use it when running the cable box. If I change to the DVD player or anything on the smart TV I only have audio from the cable box. I can run more composite cables from the other devices to the back of the pioneer box and switch the box and it work just fine.

But here is the problem with that. I am giving this home to my Inlaws and I don' want to live over there fixing their tv every day because they have the wrong or no sound.

What I am looking for is a Receiver that I can run 7 surround sound speakers that has a HDMI IN and an HDMI OUT that will play whatever is on the TV.

Is this possible?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Hello.

Can anyone recommend a good soundbar between $100-$500 range ?

I have comprised a list and perhaps someone might have some experience with one of these or tell one if there is one I should avoid because its obsolete or poor performance?

VIZIO SmartCast 36" 5.1 Wireless Soundbar System
Yamaha YAS-207
Polk Command bar
Polk Magnifi mini
Pioneer SP-SB23W
Monoprice 108247
Zvox SB500
Bose solo 5
etc....
or perhaps one that is not on the list.

Is there something that gives you a good bang for the buck ?

Thanks.

Hello . Today I added a 2nd jbl studio 550p to my system. I have
Boston VRs
Boston VR920
Sony SSCS5 surrounds and now
2jbl studio 560ps.
I need suggestions on where to place the woofers. Ive been trying to do them on the front wall flanking the center speaker and between the mains and center. Any suggestions on where to place ? Is my space to small in the back so the front stage is my only option ?

Projector edge blending - Advice

$

Hi

I am looking for some advice. I have a games room I am looking to upgrade to a dual projector setup. Only two requirements are 1080p and edge blending as I want to be able to have a dual screen option from my pc or singles for two Xbox. The idea of ultra wide cinema style does sound good too.

So can anyone recommend a projector to go for? I was looking at the second hand market mainly at the older generation.

Or maybe a software program I can use to bring it all together.

Google brings up some very old videos and the software site are all commercial.

Thanks in advance.

Rusty

Looking for Working Audio Authority c-1024a

Hey - can't seem to find one of these units that allows a logitech harmony 900 to control a bose lifestyle system. They stopped making them 5+ years ago. The bose system remote is proprietary and this is needed to convert IR from the logitech remote to a lifestyle 20. I know I should replace everything but easier said than done, because the system is in a boat and it would be a major pain in the ass. I did buy one on Ebay, but it stopped working almost immediately. Any ideas where I can source one? A few online stores say they have them, but don't at the end of the day. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Rob.

Receiver recommendation

I recently moved and have a 5.1 setup in a medium sized room in my basement with a 5.1 setup plus a sub. I have an old Yahmaha RX V-540 receiver. It is acting up and I think it's time for a new receiver. Looking for a decent receiver - not looking to break the bank. Will be used primarily for DVD and TV/home theater use.

Appreciate recommendations/insights.

Netflix on Thursday unveiled a trailer for Bandersnatch, a standalone Black Mirror movie that is set to be released this Friday, Dec. 28th...as previously reported, Bandersnatch is expected to function as an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure-style film...Bandersnatch reportedly hails from director David Slade, who helmed the Season 4 installment 'Metalhead' (a reference to the episode is included in the trailer at the 0:15 mark)…contrary to speculation, the release of Black Mirror Season 5 will not coincide with the premiere of Bandersnatch...a Netflix insider tells TVLine that the anthology series’ next batch of episodes will arrive at a later date...

JVC advice needed, DLA-X790R or DLA-NX5?

Hello All,
I need some advice on my next upgrade. My current FP is a DLA-RS1(having some dust issues) in a light controlled room. Screen is a 96" Carada though I am looking to upgrade that as well to a 106" or up to a max 120" possibly. Seating distance is 13'. is the upgrade worth the extra 2 Grand? Has anyone here seen both projectors. I would appreciate any input. One of my concerns is that I wont see the benefits of true 4k with a smaller screen.
Thanks,
Ron

SB16 ultra copy

Hello everyone.
I visited a friend a few days ago and tested his brand new 2x SB16 Ultra woofers, i was mindblown what theese small cabinets can do.
Now i want to build something that can preform as good as the svs woofers.
But im stuck already looking for a nice driver.
Cabinets have to be small but still be able play low frequency.

Right now i got a Crown XLS2505 that can do 2ohm dual 1200w or 4ohm bridged 2400w.

I have found two possible drivers, but they require INSANE ammount of power.
