building a theater in my morton building

its insulated and has the inside extra layer of metal sheeting , theater would be 26 wide and about 35 to 40 feet of the building, ceiling is 11 feet. no doors, only one window thats 3

floor is concrete it doesnt rattle too much, i put some old dual 12s out there just to see how it woud behave.

whats the best ideas for taming the reflections, banners with some kinda insulation on them
and or any suggestions to tame the space. floor will be epoxy painted and have rugs, its heated in winter and doenst really get above 75 even in the summers, its a 2016 morton building/mancave.

goal is to go with 2 or 4 big diy subs and most likely use some pro grade speakers and newer preamp with atmos.
i already have a fixed screen i think its 180 or 200 inche mounted and gonna use my projector from my basement its a jvc 4k upshift i forget the model but it looks fine on the screen size

Half a year since my Subwoofer purchase .....

Well it has been about half a year since I got my Funk Audio 18.1 Subwoofer (fittingly it was delivered to my house on Canada day last year).

Nathan (owner of F.A.) brought the sub to my house himself , and helped me choose the location and set it up. So I could not have had a better person to make sure my first real subwoofer was working and set up properly.

It was my first time even hearing an 18" subwoofer , so needless to say I was (and still am ) super impressed !

Everyone that comes over , just drools over it and they can't get over how imposing it looks with its size and grandeur.

Admittedly , my guests come from having mostly 8" subwoofers (One had a 12" ) or no subwoofer in their homes.
So none had even seen an 18" monster before (or knew it even existed) LOL

One of the common things we all agree on is, how effortless and clean the Funk sounds , even at concert level sound , there is NO distortion that we can hear , just clean, jaw-dropping powerful, impactful bass .

Unlike many on here , I have no need or desire to get 2 subs, as this one FUNK , is more than enough for my needs for the foreseeable future.

On the back it is set to about 1/3 and is very loud when needed and matches my towers perfectly , I have never even tried to put the gain more than half way.

I still get giddy like a school girl , when in my man cave with the Funk. It is my favorite room in the house .

It has no grill , so I do sometimes catch myself just staring at its one hypnotic eye.

One of my friends said : that my Funk , even with the volume off , LOOKS Louder than his sub at max volume....LOL

I want to say a big Thank You ,to those here on AVS Forum , that helped me with my subwoofer choosing dilemma last year! And for answering my questions and sharing your advice . The expert knowledge we have here is amazing and humbling and I am thankful to all of you for enthusiastically sharing it !

Unable to get 4K on Vudu Native App Vizio P75-F1

I posted this in the P-series Owner's thread, but I didn't get many responses.

I am able to get 4k on Netflix, Amazon, and Youtube with the native apps and casting from my Android phone. However, I can not get 4K on the Vudu native app or by casting from my phone. I get 1080p and DolbyVision on the Vudu movies that I own in UHD. I have also tried the same movies by casting from the MoviesAnywhere app. I get the same results. A couple of the movies I have tried are "The Magnificent Seven" and "Mission Impossible: Fallout."

I have changed the default playback quality to UHD in the app and activated Full UHD Color on the TV. I have a very stable 16Mbps download speed and I have the TV connected via ethernet. Any suggestions?

UHD disk to calibrate and test 4k projector?

$

I have new JVC RS1000 projector on the way and want to check it for obvious issues and perform basic calibration by eye. I have Panasonic 820 blu ray player, but nothing else capable of outputting 4K. Is there a disk or maybe a movie that comes with 4k test patterns that people would recommend for my purposes?

Thanks in advance!

Non-DLP 4K projector ?

I have an Optoma UHD65 for the last 18 months . I am bothered by rainbows on it, unfortunately. Not all the time, but it's especially apparent and bothersome on titles, like white on black, which I like to read. And subtitles also (not a native english speaker here).

The HDR picture on this projector is also somewhat underwhelming in terms of brightness, even after tuning.
Lastly, the lack of flexibility for vertical lens shift has been a problem.

What would be a logical upgrade for me in 2019, if I wanted to go that route, that doesn't have the above issues ?

Receiver not playing Surround via PC

Hey! I've just gotten a 5.1 speaker system along with a Sony STR-DH790 AV Receiver. I'm a complete audio noob, so take it easy please.
My PC graphics card is connected via HDMI to a monitor, and via HDMI to the receiver.

So far, when I set the receiver mode to "Dolby Surround", it plays audio on all speakers.

But since I read that the "AFD" mode (Auto Format Decoding) would be best because it automatically detects the source audio and then plays it accordingly without filtering it like it would be with the Dolby Surround setting, I would like to use it.

I have tried playing a BD movie on my PC that includes 5.1 dts-hd sound, but it is only played on the front speakers.

When in AFD mode, the receiver always says "Linear PCM" (By the way, what does that mean?) on the display (I'm assuming this is where it should actually say DTS or Dolby something when I'm playing the movie).

I have tried setting the playback device in the Windows right-click menu to "5.1" as well as "Stereo", but it always says Linear PCM on the receiver and only uses the front speakers.

(How) Can I change this so that it plays on all speakers in AFD mode?

Hi

Posted elsehwere about updating a 1991 2.0 modest system. Finally took off covers from LX44 and the foam is more or less gone. I wanted to use these later in another room and was wondering what folks think of DIY refoaming - seems relatively easy from a few utube videos. not surrprisingly they are also incredibly dusty - can us just vacuum them?

I also see technology has changed dramatically. For all I know a set of new $100 speakers will sound better than the LX 44s

I am fine with the LX44s, tho after I upgrade I might find them atrocious - only time will tell.

any preferences. .

I have a variety of other old speaker, in different rooms, and have never really done a comparison. So I will give it a try. curious tho, if any are much better than others
1. the JBLs above
2. Mission 8vet
3. polk r15
4. Brookstone 3 CD Vertical Table Top with speakers, no sure who made them

thanks

The Rush Creek Theater - Build Thread

Hi everyone, I am currently in the process of building a new home theater in my lookout style basement, in a year-old house. I built a theater room in my old house, so I have some experience, but it was several years ago and it only turned out ok.

So here is my situation we built this house my wife agreed that I should finally get to have the home theater I want (Within reason). Now I have been wanting to get started since I moved in, but life gets in the way. That brings me to why I need to start work now..
I work from home, and my office is in a upstairs bedroom , 5 months ago we had a beautiful baby girl who currently sleeps in our bedroom and the only place for her to go is my office, so if I ever want to sleep again, I need to move my office downstairs(side note: I’m so tired).

So I did a few thing right when we built the house..
1. I did not let the build finish the basement. There are no wall built or framed out, and I can get into the ceiling.
2. I made sure the basement was laid out in a correct orientation.
3. I paid a whopping $2000 dollars to have them add 2 extra course of brick, giving me over 9’ of ceiling height. ~112’’

Now I will admit the room is not perfect fit, but it’s pretty darn good IMHO..

So a couple of rough ideas.
1. Ceiling mount Projector with screen.. 130’’ – 150’’
2. Dolby ATMOS 5.1.2/4 or 7.1.2/4 but of course wiring for a 9.1.4.
3. For Speakers, I have small children so, in-wall or on-wall/Ceiling speakers might be a good idea.
4. One note.. Maybe I can’t afford all the coolest stuff now(see note about baby) but I want make sure that in 5 years when I can, my theater can be upgraded.

General build ideas
1. It would be cool to make the whole basement a theater, but I need an office if I ever want to sleep again.
2. I think I should make the wall with the screen with 2x6 and not 2x4.. so I can fit speakers in there.
3. I’m not sure how important sound proofing is, no one sleeps right above the basement. There is a whole ground floor between the basement and the bedrooms. However, if there is something that I should put in the ceiling just in case that would be nice to know.
4. For the floors, I’m going to put a subfloor down then carpet(I’m in MN it can get cold in a basement)

That about it, except to say I feel very much out of my element here. I know enough to know that I don’t know nearly enough. I have read through the forums for a few months, and somehow I’m more confused then before.
So that led to the one mistake I made so far, and that was asking for a few HT companies to come over and tell me what they thought. Which made it very clear to me that I don’t know enough yet. I mean.. I don’t have any idea what speakers I want, or if I need an amp, or what I need to do to make sure I can calibrate everything once it is installed.

Anyway here is the plans I got from the builder with a plan they sorta suggest, but again nothing is built yet so as long as there is an office down there somewhere.. I’m good. Also I did a very quick, layout in ms paint.. to give a very rough idea.

Thanks in advance. Step #1 is cleaning out the rest of the basement. getting some good measurements, then I will post some pictures..

AV Receiver Recco

Looking for reccos for AV receiver. Old/discontinued is fine, I don't mind eBay. I have 50% hearing loss and don't need power, so anything out there would work in terms of quality.

Required:
  • HDMI 2.2
  • Subwoofer out
  • Remote
  • Solid wifi performance (my streaming is 100% wireless)
  • Phono out (unless I'd save enough to justify a $55 outboard preamp)

Hoped for:
  • Blu-Tooth (could workaround via Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter)
  • Compatibility with Plex

My system's two channel (plus subwoofer), but two channel systems are strangely more expensive, and seldom include HDMI connectivity. So...I guess I'll squat in stereo within a 5.1/7.1 channel system.

Current setup:
  • TV: LG OLED55B7P
  • Turntable: Denon DP-35F
  • Blu-Ray: OPPO BDP-103
  • Streaming: Roku Streaming Stick+ (which I may wind up bypassing in favor of OPPO's streaming apps)
  • Speakers: AR TSW-610 (2) and MartinLogan Dynamo 300 subwoofer

Need paint/acoustic advice for very difficult HT room

$
0

I am building a basic home theater in my basement, and because the room is anything but ideal, I figured I'd ask for advice before I start buying paint, trim, carpet or other items.

The ceiling height is only about 6.5 feet at it's tallest point. All of the walls and ceiling are white texture paint, which is not ideal for movie viewing. It's an L-shaped room about 15x20 feet, but I'm only using the larger half of the L shape. So overall home theater area is about 10 feet wide and 15 feet deep. There are beams and air ducts that have been enclosed. For size reference, the screen is 110" 16x9.

I had planned on going with a dark red color scheme with gold accents, similar to a 1920's movie theater, but I've been hearing about the red color possibly tinting the screen due to reflection. I'd be interested in any other suggestions for colors, but I already have red curtains on either side of the screen that I'd like to keep if possible.

Once everything is painted, I plan on putting some trim and a short platform around the front speakers to get rid of the gaps. Originally I wanted to enclose the speakers, but their black color and wedge shape already works well under the screen. Plus I need to keep cost to a minimum.

The shelf and other random junk near the seating area will be gone soon, so things will be much more open. I might also switch to some smaller rear speakers and hand them on the walls if needed.

Fabric and trim would be awesome, but I doubt I can afford it.

The other big problem is acoustics. Because of the room size and surfaces, the bass cancels out horribly, and there is also reflections of higher frequencies. Things will be better once I get carpet, but I was told the bass issue might not be fixable without lots of really thick padding all over. I have 4 18 inch subwoofers being fed with 1,250 watts each, and despite the whole house rattling like crazy, there isn't much bass in the seating area at all.

Yellow Zone on Projector Central

$

Hi all,

I've been lurking and searching for a while but can't seem find an answer to this. Sorry if it's one of those questions that's been discussed ad nauseum elsewhere.

I think I've found the ideal projector for my room and screen (which are both fixed sizes). My hesitation is that when I measure the projection size, I'm firmly in the yellow range on Projector Central. The size is correct, so is there any disadvantage to having the projector placed at that distance (in this case 10')? Or does it just allow me to watch in a brighter room?

Vertical Stripes Beamer

I received today from my landlord an old beamer, the Sharp XV-Z9000E. I was checking out the connections and how to connect, but first I wanted to try if it still worked fine.
The strange thing is , that I have on the right side of the image, vertical stripes.
Is this a easy fix? Or does this means that the projector is not good anymore?

First Projector (AT Screen)

$

Hi,

I am remodeling my basement and have begun looking at projectors and screens.

I think I'm going to go with one of the Seymour AV AT screens, but they're very expensive.

I'm looking at a 16:9 105" wide AT screen.

I've been looking at the Epson 5040UB, but I keep reading that they pretty much all fail...

So, I started looking at some Sony and JVC projectors, but having a really hard time settling in on one.

4K is way out of my budget.

Ideally for the projector, I'd want to stay close to $2,000, but willing to go a bit above.

Any thoughts on the Sony HW45ES, HW65ES, or the JVC LX-UH1.

Any other brands/recommendations are welcome.

My room can be as black as needed, since there are no windows (basement), but I have installed around 12 recessed LED lights, on dimmers. There is bound to be some ambient light.

Please help! There is way too much info out there... it starts to get very confusing for someone that has never looked at this before.

Thanks!
